Everything Mums!

Everything Mums!

Don’t be sad that summer blooms are almost over, Mums will fill the gardens as we welcome Autumn. The hardy mums you will find at Sawyer Home & Garden Center come in an array of colors. And now is the time to plant! The longer the mum has to set its roots, the better chance it will rebloom the following year. When mums are planted too late in the fall they will not survive the winter.

But what color? There are so many to choose from!

If you are planning to decorate in the fall with pumpkins and gourds use orange, bronze, yellow and cream mums. If you have a lot of evergreen plants already established as a good backdrop, plant the bright pinks, reds, and whites. To have good curb appeal only use one or two of the brighter colors. This makes the blooms stand out more, rather than mixing a bunch of colors.

Mums also make great container plants. They fit perfectly in ceramic pots or in a window box. Most landscape plants will make a great backdrop for mum groupings. For texture, add an ornamental grass or a berry shrub. When it comes time to plant take these factors into consideration.

  • Sunlight – Mums need at least 6 hours of sun a day.
  • Soil – Mums thrive in well-drained soil. If the soil is too dense add compost. Plant them 1 inch deeper than they were in the container you purchased them in.
  • Roots – Mums roots are shallow and they do not like competition. Be careful with the roots when you spread them while planting.
  • Watering – Water newly planted mums thoroughly. After they are established they need 1 inch of water a week. If bottom leaves look limp or brown, water more often. Avoid soaking the foliage.
