Spring Ahead and Plan!

If these cold winter months have you dreaming of colorful spring days, turn your dreams into reality! The days are slowly getting longer, the holidays are over so… start planning your spring garden now! We all know that good planning leads to great success and Sawyer Home & Garden Center is here to help make your garden successful!

Quick Review!

The best first step to take is to review what worked and what didn’t last year. Journals are great for preventing a repeat mistake. Journals are also great for keeping track of ideas, goals and new things you want to try.

Decide where things go!

Don’t start with what you are going to plant, start with where. This prevents you from having too much to plant and not enough room. This applies to both flower and vegetable gardening. Map out the area to till for your vegetable garden and look for gaps in your landscape that need filling. Find all your free space and then…

Decide what to plant!

Research varieties based on what you want to yield. For example, if you are going to make salsa with your tomatoes, you will want a firm more hardy tomato plant. Decide what you want to plant and then map it! Make sure you have enough space and sunlight for everything to grow properly. Buy your seeds early and start the sprouts in your home before spring. For flower beds, pick colors and varieties that will do well in your yard. Make sure those that need sunlight have plenty.

Check your supplies!

Check all your tools to make sure they are in good working condition. You never want to be surprised with a leaky hose or a broken trowel when you just found the motivation to get to digging! Any type of fertilizer, dirt, grass seed, pest repellant and more can be found in our store.  Now is the time to shop for any accessories including outdoor décor! We have beautiful garden decorations and all the tools you need for your garden at SGC!

Put it on paper!

If you haven’t started some kind of journal, I strongly suggest you do. Look up growing calendars and create your own that matches what you are growing. Make note of when certain plants need specific attention. Try to time the seed planting so that you start with the ones that need longer to grow fully. This can be tricky for even the most experienced gardeners to master.

Ask SGC!

SGC employees are always happy to help. Stop in and talk to any associate if you have any questions!
