Fall Soil Testing

It is a no brainer that soil is important to a plants health. Soil provides all the minerals, organic matter, oxygen and water that plants need. Fall time is a great time to test your soil and see how it compares to the ideal soil.

It is important to test the pH of the soil because it signifies the plant’s ability to draw nutrients from the soil. Here is a basic pH scale.

Most plants prefer soil that is neutral; between 6.2 and 7.2. Some might prefer a slightly more acidic soil such as azaleas. To achieve the desired pH for acidic soil add a lime substance. Alkaline soils will usually require a conditioner containing sulfur. But a soil test can tell you so much more besides the pH!

Test kits for soil moisture, sunlight, and fertility are all available at Sawyer Home & Garden Center. These tests will indicate which elements are missing fro you soil and how you can fix the problems. You can always take a sample to a local Cooperative Extension office and get results for a fee, but in most cases it is easier to test yourself!

Soil testing kits will include vials, tables and a chart to interperate the results. If you are using a testing meter, simply insert the probe into the soil and read the results! Make sure to read and follow all manufactueres instructions for the best and most accurate results. Wet soil can alter the reading, make sure the soil is fairly dry. It is also smart to check the soil more than once in differet spots to verify your results.

Happy Testing!
