Everything You Need to Know About PUMPKINS!

Pumpkins are currently in their peak harvest season and the possibilities are endless. Whether you are cooking or decorating with them keep reading to learn some helpful tips!

You pull up to Sawyer Home & Garden Center and you see the storefront lined with beautiful pumpkins. You know that SGC only sells the best of the best pumpkins, but you still want to make sure you are purchasing the best pumpkin you can find. Here are a few tips for picking out the perfect pumpkin.

  • Check for smooth, even toned skin. Avoid bruises, scratches or signs of mold.
  • Give them a knock! Ripe pumpkins will have a hollow sound.
    • If you are carving, the more “unripe” the longer it will last
    • Make sure it stands up straight. If it has a flat spot see if you can incorporate it in the decorating.
    • The longer the stem the better!

When it comes time to carve:

  • Allow pumpkin to reach room temperature.
  • Start from the center of the design and move outward.
  • Only apply light pressure to prevent damaging the pumpkin, or knife… or your hand.
  • For a long lasting pumpkin, coat edges in petroleum jelly.
  • If pumpkin shrivels, revive it by soaking it in water for 10-15 minutes.

If you are making tasty treats:

  • Pie and cheese pumpkins are the best for cooking.
  • No need to worry about the outside look of the pumpkin, it doesn’t affect the taste.
  • Choose a pumpkin that feels firm and heavy for its size.
  • How long they will keep:
    • Room temperature – 1 month
    • Cool cellar or refrigerator – Up to 3 months
    • Cut – Use within 5 days
    • To store cut pumpkin wrap it tightly in plastic and store in fridge.
    • A 5lb. pumpkin will yield roughly 4 cups of mashed pumpkin pulp
    • Cooked pumpkin freezes very well! Just put in plastic bag in freezer with date!
      • When ready to use, let thaw on counter for 20 minutes.
