Your vegetable garden will need special attention now that the season is changing. Make sure all frost-sensitive plants are completely harvested before the first frost. If you are eager to extend the harvest you can cover plants with a blanket on nights when frost is predicted. Now through mid-October is the time to plant garlic for harvest next summer.

It’s a blue time for blueberries, they are almost done! Hopefully we will have them for a couple more weeks here at Sawyer Home & Garden Center, but there is no guarantee. Now is the time to stock up and freeze some blueberries so you can enjoy them this fall! You can pick up a 5 or 10 pound box from our Famers Market everyday between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm.

When and how to prune hydrangeas can be a tough question to answer. The right way to prune this plant depends on a couple of factors; the species, old wood or new wood, and how you want the bush to look. For the most part hydrangeas only need to be cut after the flowers fade through August 1st. Pruning after that could cause the plant not to bloom in the spring.

It is time to deadhead and feed your roses! Hopefully we see some Harbor Country sunshine soon so we can get outside! First take care of deadheading, which is simply removing the spent blooms and future seeds. This helps encourage the plant to quickly bloom again.
